Hampton Roads District, April 2008
Transportation continues to be at the forefront of issues for Hampton Roads.
Reports from the Hampton Roads residencies and
the Midtown Tunnel Corridor:
In light of renewed forecasts that show a reduction in statewide revenue and the Supreme Court decision regarding the Transportation Authorities, there are many challenges ahead as the commonwealth works toward solutions to fund future projects.
As you will see in this quarter’s report, there is an abundance of construction and maintenance activity going on throughout the district. With fewer dollars available for new construction projects, the district must continue to focus first on maintaining our existing roads as mandated by the commonwealth.
Over the upcoming months our repaving, surface treatments and repair work hits full stride.
One major change that will occur this spring will be the outsourcing of interstate maintenance and operations on the Southside though VDOT’s Turnkey Asset Management Service (TAMS).
Beginning in May, the maintenance of Interstates 64, 664, 564 and 264 will be turned over to a private contractor. As you may recall, in August 2005 the Hampton Roads District instituted TAMS on the Peninsula along I-64 from Richmond to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
The results of TAMS have been continued maintenance and operation of the Interstate system, and increased focus on primary and secondary roadways by VDOT crews.
In addition to ongoing maintenance efforts, VDOT is making progress with current and upcoming construction projects. The region’s major projects such as I-64/Battlefield Boulevard, Warwick Boulevard and Chincoteague Bridge are all on time and on budget.
We are also moving forward with planning several other proposed projects that include the Gilmerton Bridge in Chesapeake, the I-64/264 Widening to Witchduck Road in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and the Public-Private Partnership for the Midtown Tunnel Corridor/MLK Expressway Expansion in Portsmouth.
Please review the information in this legislative update. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your local resident engineer or myself to discuss the activities listed in this report.
Sincerely,
