Applicants must follow the Fairfax County & VDOT street acceptance process to turn secondary roads over to VDOT for maintenance in Fairfax County. This process has recently changed to include an “Initial Submittal” as part of the pre-construction phase.
Developers are responsible for working closely with their Fairfax County Inspector throughout this process.
NOTE: An accounts receivable is established by VDOT for all street acceptance activities. The charge will be actual staff time expended for package reviews and field inspections. Verification of charges will be emailed from VDOT Fairfax Permits to the developer after the charges are made.
Transitioning to the New Process
Follow the new process and submit an Initial Submittal as part of the VDOT Tie-in Permit Application Package for:

Site Plans and Public Improvement Plans that have not received a VDOT Tie-in Permit prior to June 6, 2005.
Follow the new process and submit an Initial Submittal prior to a bond extension/reduction request after June 6, 2005 for:
- Site Plans and Public Improvement Plans that have received a VDOT Tie-in Permit prior to June 6, 2005 that submit a bond extension request after June 6, 2005.
- Subdivision Plans and Site plans for construction of Townhouse Dwelling Units that submit a bond extension request after June 6, 2005.
Continue to follow the old process until final acceptance if:

The First or Final Form I package has been submitted to Fairfax County prior to June 6, 2005. Forms for the old process are available in our office.
The new process includes four submittals to VDOT:

Initial Submittal (Pre-construction)
2.
Asbuilt Utility Checklist Submittal (after construction)
3.
Post Construction Submittal
4.
Final Submittal
