Virginia's Interstate System

On June 29, 1956, President Eisenhower signed the
National Interstate and Defense Highways Act. That legislation authorized one of the biggest engineering projects ever undertaken: the U.S. Interstate Highway System.
In 2006, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the federal law that brought America this unparalleled system. The 46,508 miles of superhighways that resulted transformed our nation and economy. It’s a symbol of freedom and a tribute to human ingenuity.
