Jeff Hart wins first place in statewide skills competition
RICHMOND, Va. – Jeff Hart, Transportation Operator II for the Oakwood area headquarters, recently won first place in the Virginia Department of Transportation Backhoe Skills Competition in Richmond.
Last fall, Hart and a fellow employee from the Wytheville Residency placed first in the team backhoe competition.
To compete in the statewide event, employees were required to place first or second in their residency competitions, and then place in the top three in the district competition.
In the backhoe competition operators use a standard tractor equipped with an excavator, referred to as the "bucket," to place coffee cans filled with concrete onto a 4x4 post within three minutes. Also, operators have to pull a child’s size wagon through an obstacle course using the bucket of the backhoe within three minutes. The competition demonstrates the operator's ability to control the excavator.
