Six highway projects valued at $3.8 million approved for southwestern Virginia


RICHMOND, Va. – Six highway contracts were recently awarded in the Bristol District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The Bristol District consists of 12 counties in southwestern Virginia: Washington, Smyth, Lee, Scott, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Bland, Wise, Dickenson, Grayson and Wythe.

Fort Chiswell Construction Corporation, Bluefield, received a contract valued at approximately $1.5 million to replace bridge decks on Routes 11 and 730, both located over Interstate 81 in Smyth County. There will be north and southbound lane closures on I-81 due to the bridge repairs on Routes 11 and 730.

Two contracts were awarded to Mac Construction, Inc., Oakwood, for projects in Buchanan County: a $285,343 contract to widen and pave a one-mile section of Route 616 - State Line Ridge and a $186,514 contract to pave a half-mile section of Route 628 - Burnt Chestnut Branch.

The following contracts were also awarded:
- Estes Bros Construction, Inc., Jonesville, received a $974,356 contract to repair the Route 71 bridge over Moccasin Creek in Scott County, located just north of Route 613.

- A $696,154 contract was awarded to Ken Construction Company, Inc., Lebanon, to repair the Route 83 bridge over Pound River in Wise County, located just north of Business Route 23.

- Elk Knob, Inc., Pennington Gap, received a $155,425 contract to widen and pave approximately a half-mile of Route 635 – Horton Ridge Road in Russell County, from 4.7-miles north of Route 67 to Route 634. (END)
