Route 674 bridge in Smyth County closed to traffic
Inspection finds need for repairs

SUGAR GROVE, Va. – The Route 674 bridge located over South Fork Holston River in the Sugar Grove area of Smyth County was closed this afternoon (Tuesday, February 12) due to findings during a routine bridge inspection.

The bridge was recommended for closure due to the deterioration of the steel beams.  VDOT has been inspecting the bridge annually and in February 2007 the weight limit was lowered to 3 tons, which is the weight of a passenger vehicle or pick-up truck.

It is anticipated that repairs will begin in approximately two months and will take about one month to complete.  State forces will perform the repairs, which will consist of the replacement of all the beams and the timber deck.

Motorists can detour around the bridge by utilizing Routes 16 and 675. (END)
