Cautious driving recommended following snow/ice storm
While improved road conditions are reported throughout the nine counties in the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Culpeper District following last night’s snow and ice storm, motorists are urged to use extreme caution if they have to travel this evening or tomorrow morning. As of 3 p.m. today (Sun., Dec. 14), I-64 in the counties of Albemarle and Louisa and I-66 in Fauquier had been upgraded from moderate to minor conditions (bare pavement with icy spots). Minor conditions were also reported on the primary roads (roads numbered 599 and below) in Albemarle, Greene, Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Fluvanna, Louisa, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties.
Approximately 50% of the district’s secondary roads and roads in subdivisions remain covered with snow and ice with reported snow depths ranging from two inches in Louisa and Fluvanna to five inches in Madison and Rappahannock. Road crews will be working through the night, plowing and applying salt and abrasives as needed.
With freezing temperatures forecasted for the evening and night hours, motorists are urged to allow extra time to reach their destination and to be on the lookout for icy spots.
