Culpeper VDOT, Superior Paving Win Statewide Asphalt Award
The Culpeper District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Superior Paving of Gainesville received the top awards from the Virginia Asphalt Association for a five-mile section of Rt. 17 in Fauquier County beginning at the Stafford County Line.
In making the award, judges look workmanship and material quality, as well as the ride quality of the road after the paving job was completed. The appearance of the road is also taken into consideration – were the joints even in the pavement or were marks left in the pavement from the asphalt rollers?
The stretch of Rt. 17 technically won two awards for the asphalt industry- one under the Maintenance program, recognizing highway maintenance activity, and one under the SMA – Stone Matrix Asphalt, which recognizes the actual material included in the pavement. The award also recognized Robert Walton, the Project Superintendent from Superior Paving and Inspector Sydney Langford from VDOT.
