ROUTE 28 BRIDGE OVER CEDAR RUN IN FAUQUIER COUNTY APPROVED
CULPEPER -- The Commonwealth Transportation Board today approved a contract to replace the aging Rt. 28 bridge that crosses Cedar Run south of Catlett.
The $2,619,136 contract, awarded to Moore Bros., Inc., of Verona, Va., calls for construction of the new structure slightly east of the existing bridge. The shift is a result of the board’s approval to widen Rt. 28 to a four-lane facility following the Route 28 corridor study for Prince William and Fauquier counties.
Although the new bridge will be built downstream from the existing bridge, thus maintaining traffic during construction, motorists are advised to use caution.
The current bridge, which has been identified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, is 215 feet long. The new structure will be 240 feet long, and will be built at a slightly higher elevation than the current structure. The roadway will feature 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot shoulders.
Construction should be completed by June 30, 2005.
