Delays Likely During Slain Officer's Funeral Services

CULPEPER – Funeral services for Vicky Armel, the Fairfax County police detective slain in the line of duty on Monday, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at McLean Bible Church in Vienna. Following the funeral her body will be transported to Bright View Cemetery near Warrenton, where she will be interred.

Police are estimating that 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles, including representatives of police and emergency services agencies from across Virginia and from other states, will accompany the funeral procession. The cortege will travel Interstate 66 westbound to Marshall (Exit 28). The procession will travel south on Route 17 to Route 29 south, then onto Meetze Road (Route 643) and travel south to Bright View Cemetery.

Once the procession reaches the Marshall exit the southbound exit ramp will be closed, and will remain closed until the final vehicle in the procession reaches the Warrenton town limits. All crossovers on Route 17 will also be closed as the procession travels south toward Warrenton. During the closure traffic will be directed to Route 245 (Exit 31). Police are estimating the traffic controls will be in place for at least 30 minutes.

Motorists who are traveling through the area between noon and 2 p.m. or later are advised to expect delays and intermittent road closures as the funeral procession passes. The Virginia State Police, local police and sheriff’s offices and the Virginia Department of Transportation are cooperating to provide traffic control during the services and along the procession’s route.
