Lane Closed for Paving on I-64 Near Charlottesville
CULPEPER – One lane on Interstate 64 eastbound at the Rivanna River bridge in Albemarle County will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. Friday. The right lane closure is part of a major bridge rehabilitation project to resurface both lanes of the eastbound span. During the closure a 14-foot maximum width will be enforced through the work zone.
The right lane will be reopened no later than 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 3. Construction crews from Cleco, Inc., the contractor for the rehabilitation project, will work through the weekend pouring a high-density concrete mixture that will provide a new travel surface for traffic on the bridge. Once the concrete is poured it must cure before the lane can be reopened to traffic. The project, with a contract award of $747,925, is expected to be completed by late June.
Motorists are advised to expect delays in the area, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening on Monday and Tuesday. All drivers should slow down and use caution when approaching the work zone and be alert for workers near the travel lane as well as equipment moving in and out of the work zone. The paving operation will continue around the clock so motorists should be especially careful traveling through the work zone after dark.
