Mutton Hollow Road Reopened to Through Traffic

CULPEPER – Mutton Hollow Road/Route 634 in Greene County was reopened to traffic Friday afternoon after repairs were completed to one of the low-water structures that crosses Swift Run.

Heavy rains on November 29 caused Swift Run to flood over the structures, which are designed to carry high water over the road surface. The floodwaters washed away material under the slab that provides support and a section of the slab cracked and broke away, leaving a hole in the slab deck. The structure was closed immediately when the damage was discovered.

VDOT and contract crews relined the deteriorated steel culvert pipes that carry Swift Run under the structure and pumped grout into the space under the deck to support the concrete slab. That work was completed Friday and the road was reopened.

Engineers from VDOT’s Charlottesville Residency and Culpeper District office continue to evaluate the condition of two other low-water slab structures on Route 634 to ensure their safety.
