Southern Albemarle Roads Damaged by Storm
CULPEPER – Severe storms that blew through southern Albemarle County on Friday evening left about two dozen roads in the Scottsville area covered with water, damaged by overflowing creeks or littered with debris.
By noon Saturday VDOT crews had reopened all but one road; Route 622/Albebanna Spring Road remains closed between Route 761 and Route 638 due to high water. All other roads are passable although some are still littered with tree limbs and other storm debris.
Reports put the rain totals in some areas near Scottsville in excess of six inches, most of which fell in a two-to-three hour period Friday evening. The water and debris clogged drain pipes, washed out shoulders and damaged the travel surface on some roads. Most of the damage was reported on unpaved gravel secondary roads.
VDOT crews will continue to work Saturday clearing debris and ensuring all roads are passable. More extensive repairs will be done as soon as possible.
With the forecast for more storms and possible flooding through the weekend motorists are urged to check weather forecasts before traveling, be cautious when traveling in flood-prone areas and never drive through high water.
Motorists can receive updated information about roads closings and weather by dialing 511 on any telephone within Virginia, or on the Web at www.511Virginia.org.
