VDOT to Meet with Free Union Community Dec. 1

VDOT TO MEET WITH FREE UNION COMMUNITY
Presentation on area headquarters consolidation scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1

CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation will meet with the Free Union community to provide information about the proposed consolidation of the Free Union Area Headquarters. The consolidation of that facility, which serves northwestern Albemarle County, is part of VDOT’s plan to streamline its maintenance facilities from 335 locations to 244.

“We are confident that the sound business analysis and our comprehensive 2007 business plan are leading us in the direction we must take to address our continued downsizing and the legally required outsourcing of all interstate maintenance,” said David Ekern, VDOT commissioner, when he announced the consolidation plan on Nov. 2. “We want to give localities the opportunity to raise any issues and voice any considerations that we may have missed in our analysis before we begin implementing our plan. That is why we are taking the time to explain the plan in each district and to collect the feedback from community leaders.”

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at the Free Union Baptist Church, 4282 Millington Road in Free Union. Final decisions on the consolidation plan will be made in mid-December.
