Road Conditions Mostly Clear in Central Va.
VDOT crews completing plowing on secondaries; some freezing expected overnight

CULPEPER – Interstate and primary highways across Central Virginia are reported clear of snow at this hour and crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation are completing plowing operations on secondary roads across the district. Most secondary routes are also reported clear, although some secondaries in Albemarle, Culpeper, Greene, Madison, Orange and Fauquier counties still have patches of snow and ice.

Motorists should continue to be cautious while driving since there are patches of snow and ice in intersections, turn lanes, crossovers and ramps along the primary and interstate highways. Those conditions will likely persist through the weekend, although sunshine and above-freezing temperatures will help to melt the ice and evaporate the moisture remaining on the road surfaces.

VDOT is also monitoring the winter storm that is forecast to arrive in Virginia during the day Saturday. While the storm track is still uncertain at this time, Culpeper District crews will be mobilized in advance of the storm if the forecast indicates that Central Virginia will be affected.

VDOT crews will be available overnight to respond to reports of icing or other problems. Motorists are urged to be particularly cautious overnight Friday and early Saturday morning, and expect to encounter frozen patches and areas where water on the road has frozen overnight. If you must drive during the winter weather, observe the following winter driving tips:

·         Make sure your vehicle is winter ready and keep an emergency kit in your car.

·         Allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Wear your seatbelt.

·         Slow down. Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles.

·         Do not attempt to pass snowplows and stay at least 100 feet behind them.

·         Be aware of potentially icy areas such as low areas near water, bridges and overpasses.

·         When driving on ice, don’t slam on your brakes. Travel gently. Turn slowly. Sudden changes can cause your car to spin out of control.

·         Don’t park along the street. Snow plow drivers can’t fully clear a road if cars are in their way.

·         Know the conditions! Before heading out, call 511 for the latest weather and road condition information or visit www.VirginiaDOT.org.
