MIDTOWN TUNNEL HAS REOPENED
NORFOLK - The Midtown Tunnel reopened today at approximately 3 p.m. The tunnel that connects Norfolk and Portsmouth on Route 58 had been closed since it flooded from Hurricane Isabel. It was originally scheduled to reopen by noon on Saturday, Oct. 18; however, work has finished ahead of schedule.“The tunnel is structurally sound, essential repairs have been completed and it is safe for traffic,” said Jane S. Wimbush, VDOT Hampton Roads district administrator. “VDOT is reopening the Midtown Tunnel earlier than expected and giving this connection back to motorists today.”
The cost of damages is under $1 million. Crews removed nearly 44 million gallons of water, made repairs to the electrical and mechanical systems, and thoroughly inspected the structure and safety systems. Some minor repairs will continue to be made at night with minimum inconvenience to motorists.
During the flood repairs to the tunnel, the floodgate was tested. It was fully deployed - lowered to the ground, locked and raised up. The test was successful and the floodgate worked properly.
VDOT is working with Norfolk, Portsmouth and the Department of Emergency Management to ensure that the gates are deployed well in advance of the possible onset of flooding.
With the tunnel reopened, there will be some changes to congestion relief measures.
· Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) will continue its expanded ferry service on the Elizabeth River through Friday, Oct. 17. VDOT paid for the operation of a second ferry during morning and evening rush hours to accommodate commuters while the tunnel was closed. The expanded service will end after this Friday. For more information, call HRT at 757-222-6100.
· Berkley Bridge lifts are expected to resume their normal schedule this week.
· HOV restrictions will resume beginning 6 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 16.
