ARMISTEAD AVENUE PROJECT ENTERS LAST PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION Two new lanes to open to traffic tomorrow

HAMPTON – Motorists traveling along Armistead Avenue in Hampton between the NASA main gate and Magruder Boulevard can start taking advantage of two new lanes of roadway tomorrow. While the Armistead Avenue widening project will not be complete for a few more weeks, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews plan to open the new lanes to traffic on Thursday, May 19, weather permitting.

“While we still have to lay down one more layer of surface asphalt, motorists can safely start using the new road,” said Area Construction Engineer David Steele, P.E. “This is a busy stretch of road and we’re happy to turn it over to drivers this week.”

Crews will complete paving, striping, and landscaping on the project over the next few weeks. Remaining work includes final paving and striping of the southbound lanes as well as the new right turn lane from Magruder Boulevard onto Armistead Avenue. Motorists should continue to expect single lane closures between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily until the project is finished.

Construction on the Armistead Avenue widening project began on November 25, 2002. Contractor crews with Basic Construction Company, LLC expect to complete this $6.2 million project by the end of June.
