CHANGES ON MERCURY BOULEVARD SIGNAL PROGRESS AND IMPROVEMENTS New ramp openings eliminate a temporary signal at Mercury Boulevard interchange

HAMPTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to open two new I-64 entrance ramps off Mercury Boulevard in the coming weeks. The opening of the new ramps means one of the four temporary traffic signals, now controlling access to I-64 at the Mercury Boulevard interchange, will be eliminated.

Within the next two weeks (weather permitting, as early as July 21), traffic on Mercury Boulevard heading in the direction of the James River Bridge (southbound) will use a new right-side entrance ramp to get on I-64 eastbound. The new entrance ramp provides a dedicated lane for the traffic entering I-64 at that point. This new ramp will eliminate the need for southbound Mercury Boulevard traffic to turn left at a temporary light to enter I-64 eastbound.

At the same time, traffic on Mercury Boulevard heading away from the James River Bridge (northbound) will also have a new right-side entrance ramp onto I-64 eastbound. The new entrance ramp will be moved closer to Power Plant Way.

These changes will eliminate one of the four temporary signals on Mercury Boulevard and are expected to significantly improve the traffic flow in that area.

Once the new ramps are completed, crews will begin work on the retaining wall connecting the new flyover exit from I-64 eastbound to Mercury Boulevard.

An illustration of the new entrance ramps is posted on the project website. To see these illustrations or to get more information about the Coliseum Central Highway Improvement Project, please visit www.I64info.com.
