VDOT CREWS PREPARED FOR NEXT ROUND OF SNOW

HAMPTON ROADS — As forecasts call for possible snow in the region this weekend, nearly 400 VDOT employees are prepared to work the storm and push snow around-the-clock.

Once maintenance areas started using salt and sand during the snowstorm at the end of December, VDOT employees immediately began acquiring additional salt and sand to replenish inventory levels. “At this point, there are 15,000 tons of salt and 14,000 tons of sand on hand throughout Hampton Roads to battle the next snowfall, so we’re in good shape,” says Mac Clarke, district maintenance manager for VDOT in Hampton Roads. These totals continue to increase because maintenance areas are still receiving shipments.

The snow events that occurred in late December and earlier this week cost a total of
$1 Million. VDOT budgeted $2.7 million for the current snow season in Hampton Roads.

VDOT reminds motorists of the following driving tips for icy and snow-covered roads:
· Don’t pass a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary.
· Leave a few minutes early to allow extra time to get to your destination.
· Be alert for potential driving hazards including downed branches, trees, electric lines and icy areas, such as shady spots and bridges.
· Always wear safety belts.
· Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles, including trucks that are plowing the road.
· Keep your windows, mirrors and lights clear of ice and snow.
· Keep an emergency winter driving kit in your car.
· If you don’t have to drive – don’t. But if you must, drive defensively and smart.

Drivers can stay up-to-date on road conditions locally by tuning to 610 AM Highway Advisory Radio. Statewide road conditions are available 24 hours a day by checking the VDOT web site at www.VirginiaDOT.org or by calling the statewide Highway Helpline at 800-367-ROAD.
