VDOT TO HOST PUBLIC MEETING ON WARWICK BOULEVARD CONSTRUCTION
Crews to break ground mid-December
VDOT, the contractor, and the City of Newport will host a Public Forum on December 12 at the Mariners Museum beginning at 7 p.m. to provide locals with information about the project. At the forum, citizens will be able to view project plans, sign up for email updates, and talk with the management team in charge of project about what to expect during construction.
“VDOT, the City of Newport News, and the contractor have worked together to make this as pain-free as possible for the motorists, workers and residents who travel through this area each day,” said Project Manager Tom Druhot, P.E. “Having crews work primarily during off-peak hours between 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. will make it possible for four lanes of traffic to be kept open during peak traffic times, minimizing travel delays.”
Within the next few weeks motorists will see crews begin Phase I of the project, which includes widening and completely reconstructing the roadway’s intersection with J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. Crews will also upgrade all underground utilities, extend turn lanes, and replace the existing traffic signals and lighting at the intersection. This phase of the project is expected to take 18 months.
Motorists can get up-to-date information about the project daily at www.WarwickBoulevard.org
, including current project details, up-to-date construction information, a construction schedule including projected milestone dates, and aerial photos of the construction area. Drivers can also sign up for email updates that will keep them informed about traffic and construction activities.
Over the next few months, motorists will notice big changes along the project length. Crews will remove the median and lighting along the center of the roadway in early 2006 to allow traffic to be shifted onto that portion of the road. Temporary lighting will be provided at key intersections and walkways with high pedestrian traffic throughout the project.
A $10.2 million contract was awarded to Basic Construction in November for Phase I construction of the widening project. Two additional phases will replace all underground utilities and widen Warwick Boulevard from four to six lanes between J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Nettles Drive.
