VDOT TO SHIFT TRAFFIC ON I-64 COLISEUM PROJECT TO TWO LANES TO FINISH FINAL EASTBOUND CONSTRUCTION Third Travel Lane Expected to Reopen Within Two Weeks

HAMPTON -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor E.V. Williams will shift traffic on eastbound I-64 down to two lanes beginning at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard on Wednesday, September 14 for crews to begin laying the final striping on the roadway and to repair two small sections of concrete in the middle travel lane of the Coliseum Central Highway Improvement Project. The roadway is expected to reopen to three lanes of travel throughout the project within two weeks.

“We can’t stripe the roadway in its final traffic pattern without moving traffic off of the current travel lanes,” said VDOT Project Manager Tom Druhot. “By reducing the number of lanes we’ll be able to place all final striping on the roadway, make the required repairs in the middle lane and complete some much needed improvements to the roadway surface west of the project limits on I-64.”

The lane closure will allow crews to remove all temporary striping from the 2.5 miles of eastbound lanes and to place the final permanent striping on the roadway, signaling the near completion of all eastbound construction. Crews will also take advantage of the closure to repair two six-inch areas of pavement in the middle travel lane that did not cure properly during original construction and to expedite a separate pavement repair contract for I-64 near J Clyde Morris Boulevard.

Crews will reduce eastbound interstate travel to two lanes after morning rush hour on September 14. During the two-week closure, motorists will remain in the far left lanes of the interstate while crews focus on striping the right half of the roadway, along with adjoining entrance and exit ramps. All entry and exit ramps will have temporarily shortened merge distances during the closure.

Work is scheduled during the off-peak travel season to have the least impact on motorists. If crews are able to finish work in less time, the closed lanes will reopen to traffic earlier. All work is weather dependent.

Motorists should expect additional delays of up to ten or fifteen minutes during these lanes closures and may want to use alternate routes.

The Coliseum Central Highway Improvement Project is on schedule to be complete by August 1, 2006. For more information about this project or other work on I-64, please visit www.i64info.com.
