VDOT TO TEMPORARILY SHIFT I-64 EASTBOUND TRAFFIC DOWN TO ONE LANE OVERNIGHT THURSDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHTS

UPDATE: I-64 Eastbound Lane Closures On-Schedule to Reopen Next Week

HAMPTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contractor E.V. Williams reported today that the I-64 eastbound lane closures beginning at J Clyde Morris Boulevard in Hampton are on schedule to reopen next week. An additional lane closure is scheduled overnight this Thursday, September 22 and Friday, September 23 for crews to stripe the roadway and shift traffic to the inside lanes at the I-664 interchange.

Starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday night, crews will shift I-64 eastbound down to one lane at the I-664 interchange so that crews can finish laying the permanent striping. Traffic will be limited to one lane overnight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. both Thursday and Friday nights. The roadway will be reopened before rush hour each morning.

“We had a scare from Tropical Storm Ophelia when this work began, but fortunately, we’ve had good weather and the crews have been able to stay on schedule,” said VDOT Project Manager Tom Druhot. “.Crews have already made repairs to two small areas of concrete in the middle travel lane and continue to lay permanent striping throughout the project.”

VDOT shifted eastbound traffic on I-64 down to two lanes on September 14 to place permanent striping on the roadway and repair two small sections of concrete that did not cure properly during construction. Crews have been working around the clock to reopen the roadway by September 28. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during the closures and to use extra caution while crews complete their work. All work is weather dependent.

The Coliseum Central Highway Improvement Project is on schedule to be complete by August 1, 2006. For more information about this project or other work on I-64, please visit www.i64info.com.
