VDOT UPGRADING SIDEWALKS AND HANDRAILS AT HRBT
$3.6 million project will improve safety for workers and motorists
(HAMPTON) – Motorists traveling at night through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel should expect one of the two travel lanes to be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. daily for the next several months while the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) works to replace the deteriorating sidewalks along the tunnel walkway and to upgrade the handrails.
The $3.6 million project will boost safety for both workers and the traveling public by improving walkways that are used for maintenance and for emergency response during incidents. Roanoke-based Lanford Brothers Company Inc. began work on the project this week and expects to complete the job by June 2006
“Safety is always our first concern,” said HRBT Facility Manager Chuck Beeson. “This project offers a major benefit to motorists. It adds another level of comfort when exiting the tunnel during an emergency and enables our crews to safely use the walkways for maintenance without a lane closure.”
Work is being completed during off-peak travel hours to reduce the impact to traffic. Motorists should expect lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound directions Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until the project is complete.
