VDOT TO TEMPORARILY ALTER SECURITY SCREENING AT JAMESTOWN SCOTLAND FERRY NEXT WEEK

SURRY – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in coordination with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) will test alternative methods of screening vehicles at the Jamestown Scotland Ferry June 19-30. Motorists should expect to see additional equipment and an increase in the number of security personnel during the two-week time period.

“We continue to look for ways to improve our screening to make riding the ferry as safe and efficient as possible for motorists,” said Jamestown Scotland Ferry Manager Bill Mathus.

The alternative screening methods should not impact the length of time it currently takes to load the ferries. Motorists should expect to board on-time according to their regular schedules.

VDOT began randomly screening vehicles boarding the Jamestown Scotland Ferry in July 2004 as an increased security measure under the Federal Maritime Transportation Security Act. A three-year contract was awarded to Securiguard Inc. in late August 2005 to conduct the screening.
