JAMESTOWN-SCOTLAND FERRY SERVICE REDUCED DUE TO HIGH WATERS
WILLIAMSBURG - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) temporarily reduced service at the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry beginning at 8 a.m. today due to heavy rain. High waters caused by tropical storm Ernesto are preventing the loading ramps on the docks from safely being raised and lowered onto the smaller ferry boats. The Pocahontas, the largest ferry boat in the Jamestown-Scotland fleet, will run on a nighttime schedule until further notice, carrying motorists across the James River. The operating ferry will depart the Surry dock on the hour and the Jamestown dock on the half hour.
Ferry service may need to be suspended if water levels continue to rise on the James River. Service will be restored as soon as the waters recede, allowing the ramps to be safely secured for loading vehicles. Motorists are advised to use the Route 17 James River Bridge as an alternate route.
For updates on ferry service, motorists can call the ferry hotline at 1-00-VA-FERRY. For more information about other VDOT maintained roads, motorists can tune into 610AM, dial 511 or visit www.VDOT.Virginia.gov.
