MAINTENANCE WORK ON JAMES RIVER BRIDGE COMPLETE
NEWPORT NEWS – Commuters and other travelers will no longer have to merge for the painting contractor conducting maintenance work on the James River Bridge now that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contract is complete. This project was completed a full 10 days ahead of schedule and under budget, according to Paul Moose, Senior Construction Engineer for VDOT.
“We had an excellent contractor who made a great effort and was willing to work with us,” says Moose. “We knew that trying to finish the contract over the holiday would be rough, but we all worked together and managed to get it done before Christmas.”
The James River Bridge (U.S. Route 17) was renovated to prevent rust and deterioration. In this contract, the towers and lift spans of the bridge were stripped of old paint and then repainted as part of a preventive maintenance plan to protect it from the brackish water of the James River. Alpha Painting and Construction Co. Inc. started work on February 13 and completed all of the bridge work by December 21, 10 days before the original contract completion date of December 31, 2006. The contract was also was completed approximately 4.4% under the original contract amount of $6.7 million.
For more information about lane closures, or any additional road work, tune to 610 AM, call 511, or visit our website at www.VirginiaDOT.org. Motorists are also encouraged to call VDOT's new Hampton Roads TrafficLine at 757-361-3016 for the Highway Advisory Radio transmission from 610 AM and to access bridge and tunnel information.
