“We’re excited to bring more cameras online and expand our traffic monitoring abilities,” said Neil Reed, maintenance engineer at VDOT’s Smart Traffic Center. “These cameras are important because they allow us to pinpoint traffic problems and warn motorists of congestion and accidents so they can choose alternate routes.”
Cameras now show conditions on the rest of I-64 west of the High Rise Bridge and I-664 south of the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT). Motorists can view current road conditions by visiting www.VirginiaDOT.org and clicking on the “Road Conditions” link.
“We all have better things to do than sit in traffic, especially on a beautiful summer day,” said Reed. “A quick visit to the VDOT Web site can help motorists avoid frustrating traffic delays. The camera images also help us update 511 Virginia and 610 AM to include current traffic conditions so motorists have even more resources at their fingertips.”
This latest addition to VDOT’s growing network is part of a three phase expansion of the Freeway Traffic Management System and completes the instrumentation (cameras and signs) of the Hampton Roads Beltway on the Southside. Controllers at VDOT’s Smart Traffic Center in Virginia Beach will use the cameras and new message boards to better monitor the interstates, help clear incidents faster and alert motorists of problem areas.
The Freeway Traffic Management System is still under construction. When complete, motorists will be able to use traffic cameras to view more than 113 miles of highway throughout Hampton Roads. The next portion of the system includes 23 miles of cameras and signs on I-64 from Hampton to Williamsburg.
For important traffic information or to view traffic cameras online, visit www.VirginiaDOT.org. Motorists also can dial 511 and tune into 610 AM for current road conditions and traffic announcements.
