VDOT BEGINS WORK ON I-64 BATTLEFIELD BOULEVARD CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN CHESAPEAKE

Project will increase lanes and replace the Battlefield Boulevard Interchange and Bridge

CHESAPEAKE – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) began work on a major construction project on Interstate 64 in Chesapeake last week to help improve traffic flow and safety on a two-mile stretch of the roadway. Work got underway on the I-64 Battlefield Boulevard Project in the first week of April and will continue over a three-year time period.

The project will replace the Battlefield Boulevard Interchange and widen the interchange area from six lanes to 14 lanes. The widening includes two extra lanes in each direction that will be separated from the main flow of traffic to help motorists merge on and off the interstate. The project will stretch from the Greenbrier Mall exit (exit 289) to just before the I-464 interchange (exit 291).

“We’re committed to keep traffic flowing during this project,” said Dennis Heuer, P.E. and VDOT Hampton Roads District Administrator. “We know the scope of the project and the work zone will mean slow-downs and inconvenience, but the final results will bring us closer to widening the I-64 corridor to Bowers Hill and improving overall traffic flow and safety.”

The most challenging part of the project will be replacing the Battlefield Boulevard overpass. Crews will completely replace the bridge with a newer and better interchange that will be able to handle more traffic, especially during rush hour periods. They’ll also widen the bridge to three lanes in each direction. Part of the project also includes an HOV lane in each direction of I-64.

The project was awarded to E.V. Williams at a cost of $98.6 million. While construction will take place during the day, work requiring lane closures and significant traffic impacts will be scheduled overnight between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The project is scheduled to be complete by July 31, 2009.

Throughout the project, motorists can stay informed by logging onto www.i64info.com. There they can sign up for weekly e-mail updates, see construction progress and learn about any lane closures or traffic switches. Motorists can also call 511 or listen to 610AM for up to date traffic reports.
