VDOT CREWS RECOVER STOLEN CASH IN YORK COUNTY

YORK COUNTY – Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) helped York County Police recover a stash of stolen cash last Friday afternoon along Ft. Eustis Boulevard in York County.

VDOT workers were repairing the road shoulder around 1:50 p.m. Friday when they initially noticed coins aside the road with red dye on them. A scan of the area soon led them to a bag of money and a dye pack about 20-feet away from a roadside fence.

Crew member Keith Simmons immediately called police while another worker summoned a supervisor. VDOT immediately secured the scene until police arrived. York County Police had nothing but praise for the VDOT team consisting of Keith Simmons, Carl Nasal, Phil Saunders, Anthony Godwin, Walter Jones, Brian Gentry and Bruce Bain.

“We really appreciate them for being such terrific citizens,” said Lt. Penny Diggs, spokeswoman for York County Police. “This will be a tremendous help in solving these crimes. It’s always good to deal with citizens like these.”

Tim Morrison, VDOT Transportation/Maintenance Supervisor, was equally commendable of the crew.

“This crew could have done a million things with that money, but this shows what a professional team we have,” said Morrison. “They showed great unity in working together to keep the scene secure until police arrived. We are very proud to know that we have these types of individuals working for VDOT.”

Over past several weeks, York County has experienced several robberies which remain under investigation.
