VDOT SAVES MONEY AND TIME WITH NEW PAVING CONTRACT FOR I-264

Project runs from Broad Creek Bridge to Witchduck Road

VIRGINIA BEACH – Motorists traveling I-264 East between the Broad Creek Bridge and Witchduck Road have no doubt noticed the smoother ride in some sections as repaving of the highway continues. Work began in early July under a contract awarded to Branscome Inc. But under a modified contract, the project should be finished faster and for less money.

Under the old terms, about 2,500 feet of one lane could be paved at a time each night. Now the contractor can actually plane, or strip off the old pavement in a wider work area and pave a longer stretch. This modification is expected to save at least $125,000 and cut the time to finish the project in half.

“Under the old contract, the new pavement had to be down by the morning rush hour. The new terms of the contract allow the contractor to leave some of the road stripped without new pavement,” said Mark Cacamis, district construction engineer for VDOT. “It does mean the road won’t be as smooth during construction, but it allows the contractor to finish more of the road at once, which will speed up the project and save money.”

Work on this section of the project will be complete by the end of August. To minimize the effect on motorists, VDOT is conducting this work after rush hour, during off-peak travel hours. For more information about this project, motorists can tune into 610AM, dial 511 or visit www.VDOT.Virginia.gov.
