VDOT BEGINS WIDENING BIRDNECK ROAD IN VIRGINIA BEACH
Motorists may encounter slight delays during the project

VIRGINIA BEACH— Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach is getting a $27.9 million makeover, which will enhance the safety and capacity of the roadway. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is upgrading the 2.2-mile stretch from East General Booth Boulevard to North Southern Boulevard.

Beginning late February, crews began laying the groundwork to widen the two-lane road to a divided four-lane roadway. Project components include grading, drainage improvements, asphalt paving, planting and signal and utility installations. E.V. Williams, Inc. was awarded the contract with a set completion date of April 11, 2011.

“These improvements to Birdneck Road will provide motorists a smoother and safer commute along this popular artery,” said Antonio Bassett, Senior Construction Engineer for VDOT. “Throughout the construction, motorists can expect minimal delays with one lane in each direction open to traffic.”

Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and occasionally on Saturdays. Motorists who normally use Birdneck Road to access the Oceanbreeze Amusement Park will find the General Booth entrance more convenient throughout the project.
