Agency performing routine testing to ensure durability

HAMPTON— The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has rescheduled routine tide gate testing at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on the evenings of June 18 and 19, beginning at midnight through 4 a.m. both nights.

The tests previously scheduled for June 2 and 3 were rescheduled due to weather conditions and concerns for motorist safety.

Motorists traveling through the HRBT on these dates can expect to be stopped for 30 to 45 minutes as each tide gate is tested. According to the following tentative schedule:

• 12 a.m. - 2 a.m. Eastbound traffic will be stopped 30-45 minutes for each Gate 1 and 2
• 2 a.m. - 4 a.m. Westbound traffic will be stopped 30-45 minutes for each Gate 3 and 4

These times may vary depending on the testing procedures.

VDOT suggests that motorists avoid delays by using the I-664 Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel as an alternate route.

Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel (MMMBT)
From the Peninsula:
1. Take I-64 East
2. Exit onto I-664 South (exit just after the Hampton Roads Coliseum)
From the Southside:
1. Take I-64 East
2. Exit onto I-664 North

To minimize the impact on motorists, VDOT is conducting these tests during off-peak travel hours. For more information about this closure or other VDOT maintenance, motorists can tune into 610AM, dial 511 or visit www.VDOT.Virginia.gov.
