Commonwealth to Practice Interstate 64 Lane Reversal May 11
Expect Early Morning Traffic Delays

Richmond — As the Atlantic hurricane season nears its June 1 kickoff, we all must prepare for hurricanes, including the emergency response crews who are responsible for the safety of Virginians during hurricane-related evacuations. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), Virginia State Police and the Virginia National Guard will partner to conduct an emergency preparedness exercise on May 11 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. to test state agencies’ ability to reverse Interstate 64 traffic between Hampton Roads and Richmond.

Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 16

RICHMOND – Get out your bicycle and prepare to take to the road as May is National Bike Month. On Thursday, May 1 at 9 a.m., bicycling advocates from across the commonwealth will gather at the bell tower at the Virginia State Capitol as Deputy Secretary of Transportation Ralph Davis reads the proclamation for Bike Month 2008.

Many will participate in statewide litter pickup April 12

RICHMOND – Spring brings out orange-breasted robins picking at bugs and worms in our yards and orange-vested Adopt-a-Highway volunteers picking up litter along Virginia roadsides. Weather permitting, on Saturday, April 12, you’ll see more volunteers than usual as they clean litter from their adopted roadsides during the annual statewide spring cleanup day.

VDOT COMPLETES INITIAL REVIEW OF SPRINGFIELD ICE STORM
Agency Adopts Aggressive Program to Improve Statewide Emergency Response

RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has completed its initial review of the Feb. 12 freezing rain storm that resulted in the closure of Northern Virginia’s Springfield Interchange for several hours. Commissioner David S. Ekern delivered the report to the Commonwealth Transportation Board at its March 20 meeting noting a key finding that VDOT must refocus its emergency response mission to prevent similar significant delays from happening again.
