HIGHWAY PROJECTS AWARDED IN VDOT'S LYNCHBURG DISTRICT
Several highway contracts were recently awarded in the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The Lynchburg District consists of 10 counties in south-central Virginia: Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward.Whitehurst Paving Company, Inc., Richmond, received five contracts valued at approximately $5.8 million for asphalt surface treatment at various locations across the district. Surface treatment entails spraying a layer of liquid asphalt and rolling a layer of gravel on top. Applying surface treatment extends the pavement life, provides a non-skid surface and waterproofs the road.
Marvin V. Templeton & Sons, Inc., Lynchburg, was awarded an approximately $1.2 million contract for slurry seal schedule work at various locations across the entire Lynchburg District. Slurry seal operations involve the thin application of asphalt emulsion (oil) and sand by a special truck-mounted paving system. The material sets and hardens quickly and allows the timely reopening of roads to traffic. It also seals the roads to keep water away from the underlying material. Water seepage can lead to quick deterioration of pavement.
A $541,106.15 contract for latex modified emulsion services at locations across the 10-county district was awarded to Slurry Pavers, Inc. of Glen Allen. Latex modified emulsion, also called micro-surfacing, is a form of slurry seal.
The materials involved in these operations are temperature sensitive and the work will begin once warmer temperatures become more consistent in early spring.
Lane closures and delays are possible during these operations and motorists should use caution when traveling in these or any highway work zones. For information about the location of highway work zones statewide, visit VDOT’s website at www.VDOT.Virginia.gov or dial 511.
