LOCAL HIGHWAY CONTRACTS AWARDED

Two highway contracts were recently awarded in the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The District includes the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Pittsylvania and Prince Edward.

R. W. Harris Excavating, Inc. of Madison Heights, VA was awarded a $474,500 contract to improve and hard surface roughly 4.5 miles of road in Amherst County from the intersection of Route 755 to the dead end (Coffeytown Road) and from the intersection of Route 634 to the intersection of Route 605 (Fiddler Green Road). The project consists of pipe replacement, minor widening, adding base materials, reshaping and surface treating existing roadways and erosion control. The improvements will provide for a safer travel way by minor widening of curves were needed, improving the drainage system and proving a new, 16’ – 18’ wide, hard-surfaced road surface. The road will remain open to traffic with minimal delays during this work. The fixed completion date on the contract is December 1, 2006.

Reynolds Asphalt Paving and Sealing, Inc. of Callands, VA was awarded a contract valued at approximately $524,600 for work on Route 603 in the Straightstone Community of Pittsylvania County. The purpose of the project is to reconstruct and upgrade Route 603 (Allen Creek Road) from Route 668 to 2.0 miles south of Route 668. The project will be constructed under traffic and minimal delays are anticipated. The fixed completion date of this project is November 1, 2006.
