CARTER GLASS BRIDGE REHABILITATION PROJECT to BEGIN
Motorists will face delays and lane closures during southbound lane work

Motorists will begin seeing preparatory work for the rehabilitation work on the southbound lanes of U.S. 29 Business Carter Glass Bridge between the City of Lynchburg and Amherst County soon. The future holds lane closures and possible delays for those who utilize this structure.

Cleco Corporation of Roseland, VA was awarded a $1.8 million contract for surface, structure, railing and drainage repairs, among other items on the bridge.

To be accomplished in two stages, each stage will require a continuous lane closure with one lane with a minimum 11’-0” width remaining open at all times.

During the first stage of work, the outside (travel) lane of US 29 Business South will be closed from late January until late June. Then, traffic will be switched to the inside (passing) lane. The project is slated for completion by mid-November 2008.

The Main Street exit south of the bridge, Concord Turnpike and the Percival Island Trail will remain open during this work.

Signs, barriers and other traffic control devices will be used to alert motorists to this work and changes in traffic pattern. For information about this and other highway work zones statewide, visit www.511Virginia.org or call 511.
