ICY CONDITIONS CREATING HAVOC IN SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA
Drivers should use caution this morning

LYNCHBURG – The southern portion of the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is facing major icing this morning. Rain, sleet and/or snow fell across portions of Appomattox, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties last night and quickly froze on many surfaces. While VDOT and contractor crews responded with chemicals and abrasives, cold temperatures quickly turned the falling precipitation to an icy mess.

Early morning temperatures are hovering below the freezing mark and road and bridge surfaces are dangerous in some areas. Numerous accidents have been reported on Routes 501and 58 in the southern portion of Halifax County; in addition, crews in Pittsylvania County have been dealing with accidents and icing on Routes 29, 58 and 86. Reports of icy road surfaces and black ice closed schools in these areas.

Motorists can do a great deal to help themselves remain safe should travel become necessary during inclement weather. Follow these simple steps:

• Know the weather conditions before heading out.
• Dial 511 or go to www.511Virginia.org for additional information.
• Be familiar with the operations of personal vehicles.
• Do you have anti-lock brakes? If so, brake and hold them when stopping; if not, pump them.
• Slow down.
• Increase distance between vehicles.
• Make smooth, precise movements with the steering wheel.
• Anticipate lane changes, curves, and turns well in advance.
