MOTORISTS: BE ALERT
Icy conditions possible in many areas this morning

LYNCHBURG – Motorists may find travel difficult this morning across portions of the Lynchburg District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Rain and some freezing rain are falling over large portions of the district and temperatures are hovering near or slightly below freezing creating some icy conditions on bridges and overpasses and in low lying areas.

An ice storm warning remains in effect until 12:00 p.m. over several counties in the south-central district. An ice storm warning means severe weather conditions are occurring or expected and significant ice accumulation will likely impact travel. Nelson County in the northern part of the district is currently under a winter storm watch which means there is the potential for significant ice and sleet accumulations and high winds predicted later in the day may contribute to the downing of trees or power lines.

VDOT crews in several area residencies have been monitoring conditions throughout the morning and some are currently applying chemicals and abrasives, as necessary.

Motorists can do a great deal to help themselves remain safe should travel become necessary during inclement weather. Follow these simple steps:

• Know the weather conditions before heading out. Dial 511 or go to www.511Virginia.org for additional information.
• Be familiar with the operations of personal vehicles. Do you have anti-lock brakes? If so, brake and hold them when   stopping; if not, pump them.
• Slow down.
• Increase distance between vehicles.
• Make smooth, precise movements with the steering wheel.
• Anticipate lane changes, curves, and turns well in advance.
