Bridge Repairs Near Reagan National Airport Begin Next Month
The Commonwealth Transportation Board today awarded a nearly $2 million contract for repairs to the Route 233 bridge over Rte. 1 in Arlington, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Work will begin in June and be completed by the end of the year.
The project is located on Rte. 233 over Rte. 1 and the CSX Railroad and carries Rte. 1 traffic to Ronald Reagan National Airport.
Repairs includes removal of the existing asphalt surface and replacement with an overlay of rapid set concrete; replacement of existing deck slab joints; repair or replacement of damaged girders; cleaning and spot painting of corroded structural steel; reconstruction of cracked bearing pads and replacement of malfunctioning bearings; repair of deteriorated piers and abutment walls and the application of composite materials to the pier columns.
Repairs will be performed in seven stages to minimize traffic delays. Traffic detours and lane closures will only occur between 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily. The time frame for repair work has been coordinated with Arlington County and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Martins Construction, Inc. of Arlington is the contractor for the project.
