VDOT Completes Improvements to Intersection at
Rolling and Fullerton in Springfield
Project completed under budget
VDOT, Fairfax County officials and the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the completion at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday. Immediately following the ceremony, motorists will have access between Rolling Road and Fullerton Road.
Until now, motorists could not turn onto Fullerton Road from Rolling Road – a chain link gate prohibited access through the industrial park. In 1992, the gate opened as a temporary measure to help relieve congestion during construction of the I-95 interchange at Newington. The gate closed in 1993. However, Fairfax County and VDOT agreed they would re-open it to motorists once safety and capacity improvements were made to the intersection.
The improved intersection has turn lanes and a traffic signal. Rolling Road carries about 18,000 vehicles a day. Large tucks will not be permitted to turn onto Rolling Road from Fullerton Road.
Work on the intersection began last spring. The project was completed for less than its $996,235 budget.
