VDOT Improves Pedestrian Safety Along Reston Parkway

Pedestrians in Reston now have a longer window of time to cross streets thanks to a “smart chip” added at nine busy intersections along the Reston Parkway. The Virginia Department of Transportation activated the signals last week.

The test program, called “Rest in Walk,” targets peak pedestrian usage times during the morning, lunchtime and the evening. The extended crossing time has been implemented at nine Reston Parkway intersections: Spectrum; Temporary Road/New Dominion Drive; Bluemont Way; Sunset Hills Road; Sunrise Valley Drive; South Lakes Drive; Glade Drive; Fox Mill Road and Lawyers Road.

The “walk” symbol is automatically displayed (without the need for the pedestrian to activate the button at the crosswalk), allowing pedestrians to begin crossing the roadway when the Parkway traffic signal turns green. The “walk” symbol is displayed for nearly the entire cycle, changing to ‘don’t walk” for the final phase of the cycle.
