Route 28 Interchange at Waxpool Road /Route 625 Opens Dec. 18

The Virginia Department of Transportation, the Route 28 Corridor Improvements team and Loudoun County officials cut a ribbon on the third high-capacity interchange on Route 28 in Fairfax and Loudoun counties under Virginia’s Public-Private Transportation Act. The interchange will open to traffic tomorrow.

The intersection at Route 28 and Route 625 (Waxpool and Church Roads) was replaced with a partial cloverleaf that includes a four-lane bridge to carry Route 625 traffic over Route 28.

Following the opening tomorrow, construction will continue on the flyover bridge that will provide additional capacity for vehicles traveling north on Route 28 bound for westbound Route 625. Work will also continue to widen Church Road to four-lanes and build a bridge over the W&OD trail, eliminating the at-grade pedestrian crossing and signal to improve safety for the trail users

In September 2002, VDOT signed an agreement with The Clark Construction Group, Inc. and Shirley Contracting Company (Clark/Shirley) to develop, design and build six interchanges. Construction of the remaining two interchanges at Sterling Boulevard and McLearen Road will begin next year.

Loudoun County is the second fastest growing county in the nation. More than 100,000 cars a day use the segment of Route 28 just north of the Dulles Toll Road. By 2012, transportation officials estimate that segment will carry 200,000 cars a day.
