Delays Expected On East and Westbound Route 50 in Arlington October 27-30

The east and westbound travel lanes on Route 50 will be reduced to one lane, between Pershing Drive and Washington Boulevard from 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 until 5:00 A.M. Monday, October 30, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The lane closures are necessary as VDOT crews must construct temporary lanes before the next section of the 62-year-old bridge can be demolished. Once crews complete the paving of the new lanes, traffic will be switched onto the temporary lanes. VDOT anticipates placing westbound motorists onto the temporary configuration by Sunday afternoon and eastbound traffic will be switched on Monday morning by 5:00 a.m. prior to rush hour.

Motorists are urged to use the Pershing Drive detour prior to the lane closures to avoid possible delays. There will be one lane eastbound and westbound lane open for traffic at all times. Roadway message signs along Route 50 are in place warning motorists of the upcoming lane closures. The detour route will be well marked.

The $6.5 million Route 50 bridge rehabilitation project started in November 2005 and will be completed in July 2007.
