Traffic Advisory: Rehab of Route 50 Bridge Over Route 27 Will Cause Slowdowns Beginning March 6
Beginning next week – and for the next 16 months – motorists will encounter slow downs at the Route 50 bridge over Route 27 in Arlington while the Virginia Department of Transportation overhauls the 62-year-old bridge. The improvement project will be completed in July 2007
On March 6, the eastbound travel lanes on Route 50 will be reduced from 12 feet to 10.6 feet to give crews space to build temporary travel lanes in the median. Traffic will be shifted to the temporary lanes in the coming weeks while demolition of 24-foot segment of the nearly 100-foot wide bridge is under way.
There will be no lane closures during rush hours on Route 50 or Route 27. Motorists can expect lane closures daily between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. When detours are necessary, they will be in effect only between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. VDOT will notify motorists of changes in traffic patterns, lane closures and detours through message boards.
The speed limit through the construction zone has been lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph and an additional penalty of $250 will apply for speeding in the work zone. Motorists are urged to use caution as they enter the construction zone as conditions continually change.
North Wise Street will be closed from March 6 until July 2007. Motorists will use North Pershing Drive to access North Wise Street.

Flippo Construction Company Inc., of Forestville, Maryland is the contractor for this $6.5 million project.
