VDOT to Open Four New Lanes on I-66 in Manassas Nov. 8
By 5 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, motorists will have four new lanes on 3.3 miles of I-66 between Route 234 Business and the Route 234 Bypass, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced today.
Two lanes have been added to I-66 in each direction, one regular and one HOV lane. The inside lane is reserved for two-person carpools during peak periods. The median will be preserved to accommodate future barrier-separated HOV lanes or transit.
Next spring construction begins to widen an additional two miles of I-66, from the Route 234 Bypass to Route 29 in Gainesville. Two lanes will be added in each direction along with bridge and ramp improvements at the I-66/Route 29 interchange.
The current and upcoming widening project cost approximately $148 million, including $14 million for preliminary engineering and right of way acquisition, $44 million for construction between Route 234 Business and Route 234 Bypass, and $90 million for construction from Route 234 Bypass to Route 29.
About 120,000 vehicles travel this section of I-66 each day.
