COMMONWEALTH TRANSPORTATION BOARD AWARDS CONTRACT FOR DASH BUS FACILITY
The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a contract today for construction of a new maintenance facility for Alexandria’s DASH bus fleet. The $35 million project is a combination of Federal, state and local funds, according to VDOT.The project is being administered by the City of Alexandria as a design-build project authorized by the Virginia General Assembly in 2006. VDOT frequently partners with local governments on particular projects, and is committed to transit interests across the region.
The new DASH bus facility design includes features to qualify it for a Silver LEED certification, which is issued by the U.S. Green Building Council. Elements of the plans include:
- 90,700 square foot building with covered and heated bus storage for at least 96 buses initially, expandable to 130 buses
Adjoining maintenance garage with 10 bus bays
Two bus fueling and washing lanes
98,900 square foot rooftop parking deck
Environmentally conservative features like natural lighting in the shops and offices, bus wash water reclamation, ecologically sensitive in-ground bus lifts
Driver facilities that includes locker rooms, quiet rooms and an exercise facility
Maintenance and parking spaces to accommodate a standard 40-foot bus with a bicycle rack mounted on the front
The facility will be located off Colvin Street in an industrial section of Alexandria, so the impact on local traffic should be minimal. The City of Alexandria anticipates that this project will be completed by fall 2010.
The new facility will be ADA compliant.
