TRAFFIC SHIFTS COMING TO ATLEE-ELMONT INTERCHANGE As project nears completion traffic moving to new ramps
HANOVER COUNTY, Va.—Beginning the week of July 19, motorists entering and exiting Interstate 95 at the Atlee-Elmont Interchange (Exit 86) will notice some big changes. The Virginia Department of Transportation will begin moving traffic to the newly constructed ramps in phases so that old ramps can be removed and the remaining ramps under construction can be completed.
VDOT plans to move traffic to the new ramps in four phases. The phasing begins the week of July 19 with phases one and two being completed that week. Phases three and four will follow in August. The details of each phase are as follows:
Phase One
· Limit Existing Sliding Hill Road to eastbound traffic only, east of I-95.
· Close the existing northbound on ramp and open the new northbound on ramps.
· Detour traffic trying to access I-95 south from Relocated Sliding Hill Road. The detour will be posted.
Phase Two
· Close existing southbound off ramp and open the new southbound off ramps.
Phase Three
· Sever connection between Existing Sliding Hill Road and Relocated Sliding Hill Road.
· Close the northbound off ramp and open new northbound off ramps.
Phase Four
· Close existing southbound on ramp and open the new southbound on ramp.
During these phases there may be additional lane closures and traffic shifts as well. Motorists are encouraged to use caution and be alert when driving through this area.
“As this project enters its final stage, it will be very important for commuters and others who use the interchange regularly to pay attention and to plan ahead and allow a little extra time as everyone adjusts to the new traffic patterns,” said Rob Crandol, Ashland Resident Engineer. “VDOT has certainly appreciated the patience of residents in this area and ask for their continued patience as we complete this project.”
The Atlee-Elmont Interchange project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2004 and includes construction of a new cloverleaf interchange and collector-distributor road. It also entails the construction of nine new bridges and the relocation of Sliding Hill Road.
