VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION WINS PAVEMENT AWARD
RICHMOND—A project to widen Genito Road (Route 604) in Chesterfield County has received statewide recognition from the asphalt industry for having the best asphalt on a construction project in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) received the Asphalt Pavement Award for Virginia’s Outstanding Pavement of the Year in the construction category at the Virginia Asphalt Association’s Fall Asphalt Conference held Oct. 4.
The phase two Genito Road widening project received the statewide award after winning the Richmond District award and being recommended by VDOT’s Chief Engineer, Malcolm Kerley, P.E. Key Construction began phase two of the project to widen Genito Road from two lanes to four lanes between South Ridge Road and Old Hundred Road in December 2001 and completed the project in Sept. 2003. Lee-Hy Paving completed the asphalt paving on the project.
“While our focus is to always deliver construction projects on time and within budget, it is just as important that we do so without ever compromising safety and quality.” said Kerry Bates, P.E. VDOT assistant resident engineer for Chesterfield County. "This project is a fine example of what VDOT/Contractor communication and planning can do in providing the public with a safe and quality project. All of the credit for this award goes to the project team that included Key Construction, Lee-Hy Paving and the residency inspection staff. I would like to especially thank the contractors for their commitment to excellence. It was a privilege to work with both contractors, they really did an outstanding job."
The statewide award is given to the construction project that best meets specific criteria including a minimum length of .5 miles of asphalt paving with a minimum of 5000 tons of asphalt concrete material used on the project. Nominations for the award are also judged on consistent uniformity of the asphalt mix, ride-ability, workmanship and difficulty of construction.
