NEW KENT I-64 SAFETY REST AREA CLOSING TOMORROW FOR RENOVATIONS

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. – Motorists along I-64 west between Williamsburg and Richmond can expect the I-64 safety rest area in New Kent County to be closed for renovations beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday, September 28 until construction is completed in early June 2007.

The new I-64 west New Kent Safety Rest Area will have over 9,000 square feet, additional restroom facilities, new landscaping and parking improvements to better serve travelers. The $4.39 million contract was awarded to David A. Nice Builders of Williamsburg, Virginia earlier this month. To see a rendering of the new facility, click here.

A second facility, the I-95 south Fredericksburg Welcome Center will have approximately 14,500 square feet, additional restrooms, and ground and parking improvements that will better serve travelers. The existing site will be closed for reconstruction starting September 29 and is slated for completion by July 2007.

Both new facilities will include innovative energy and water conservation systems that will reduce short- and long-term maintenance and utility costs.

These projects are part of a $20 million statewide improvement program to renovate 11 Virginia safety rest areas and to reconstruct three safety rest area and welcome center locations.
