Three New Richmond-Area Traffic Cameras Online

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va.—Motorists traveling around the Richmond area can keep a bird’s eye view of their commute thanks to three newly installed Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) traffic cameras that are viewable using the Internet.

The new cameras give motorists a preview of traffic along Interstate 64 east and west of Richmond as well as conditions on Interstate 95 at Route 288. The new Richmond-area cameras are located at:
  • I-64 at I-295, western Henrico (exit 177)
  • I-64 at the Mechanicsville Turnpike (exit 192)
  • I-95 at Route 288 (exit 62)
The real-time traffic images are available at VDOT's Travel Center or www.trafficland.com and offer travelers the most accurate information on incidents that can impact the flow of traffic. By partnering with TrafficLand, VDOT provides motorists with camera networks for Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia, the I-81 corridor, as well as parts of Maryland and Washington, D.C.

The three cameras are the latest addition to VDOT’s statewide traffic camera network, comprising more than 500 total cameras. They join 17 other cameras installed earlier in the greater Richmond area. These cameras and other traffic monitoring technologies are all part of VDOT’s new statewide initiative to improve traffic flow and enhance safety on Virginia’s highways, called Systems Operations.

“Adding these three new cameras to our expanding traffic coverage brings us one step closer to a complete view of Richmond area highways,” said Robert Alexander, P.E., director of VDOT’s Richmond District Smart Traffic Center. “We’re excited to give motorists the ability to make informed decisions about their commutes and to provide more safe and efficient travel throughout the Richmond area.”

Motorists can view the same images as controllers at VDOT’s Smart Traffic Center. These cameras have full tilt/pan/zoom capability, so users may see the cameras move while Smart Traffic Center operators scan for incidents. Citizens can also subscribe to TrafficLand services that send traffic camera images to their Web-enabled cell phones or PDAs.

VDOT uses traffic video surveillance to monitor incidents at key interstate locations. VDOT’s Smart Traffic Centers use the cameras to dispatch emergency responders, and to coordinate incident response among various state and local agencies. The information is then communicated to motorists through 511, Highway Advisory Radio (1620 AM in Richmond), variable message signs and on www.VirginiaDOT.org. The goal is to reduce delays, increase safety and allow motorists to avoid traffic snarls.

To view Richmond’s traffic camera images, as well as those from Hampton Roads, Northern Virginia or the I-81 corridor, visit VDOT's Travel Center or www.trafficland.com. For real-time traffic and travel information throughout Virginia, call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org.
